What exactly is Asperger’s Disorder or Asperger’s Syndrome?
It is a neurological condition, part of the Autism Spectrum of disorders. It was first identified by Dr. Hans Asperger, an Austrian pediatrician, in 1944. The Asperger title was later added in recognition of Dr. Asperger’s description of individuals with the characteristics we now recognize as Asperger’s. Those with Asperger’s have difficulty interpreting and responding to cues and processing what is expected in social situations. This incomplete understanding of what others mean by their actions and words, leads to the individual’s misunderstanding of others and contributes to others misunderstanding them. They can be sensitive to touch as well as to multiple environmental sounds. There are often challenges in following verbal directions and he/she is often overwhelmed by the requirement to listen to others, especially in a group setting.
Asperger’s is not a mental illness, and individuals with this disorder have many abilities, often including high intelligence and giftedness in an area of interest. The diagnosis alone does not determine outcome. The prognosis or outcome is dependent upon the quality and extent of needed services being available and affordable.
